About Cockroaches
Cockroaches are potential carriers of diseases such as Gastro-enteritis, Dysentery and some studies show they have been linked to Asthma. They are nocturnal insects and are rarely seen during the day. Cockroaches live in cracks and crevices both inside and outside. They feed on all types of food and just about anything with nutritional value found in and around your home. There are thousands of cockroach species world wide but only a small number are regarded as a pest. The most common pest species are listed below.
Types of Cockroaches
German cockroach
An adult German cockroach grows between 12 to 20mm in length and is pale or tan in colour. The female carries an egg sack on the end of her abdomen which contains 30 to 40 eggs which will hatch into nymphs or baby cockroaches. They are an inside dwelling cockroach, commonly found in commercial kitchen areas around dishwashers, fridges and other warm cracks and crevices and occasionally in domestic homes in South Australia.
American cockroach
An adult American cockroach is tan in colour, grows to approximately 50mm and is generally considered the largest of the cockroach family. The average life span of an American cockroach is approximately 400 days and produces an average 60 egg capsules during her lifetime. They can be found in their thousands in warm, damp areas such as sewers, tunnels, restaurants, hospitals etc.
Smokybrown cockroach
An adult Smokybrown cockroach grows to approximately 35mm and is usually dark brown in colour. The average female produces 17 egg capsules in her lifetime containing 22 to 26 eggs. They are usually outdoor dwelling and are found around garages, wood piles and garden areas. In extreme weather conditions they may retreat indoors.
Cockroach Control Methods
The main control methods for the eradication of cockroaches is gel baits. These allow us to eliminate cockroaches in domestic and commercial situations without any disruption or evacuation. Residual synthetic pyrethroids and dusts may also be required to control certain species. Glue boards are used to monitor activity and identify species and problem areas. A good housekeeping & hygiene program is essential to discourage cockroach infestation. Ensure that all food scraps are removed, crack and crevices in kitchens should be sealed and minimize storage and rubbish around external areas.
