About Bees

Bees and European wasps are social insects that live in colonies with many thousands of members. They have 3 types of individuals in their colonies being the queen, drones (males) and workers. Their nests or hives can be found in trees, cracks and crevices in brickwork, chimneys, and hollows in the ground. Bees source pollen & produce honey to feed their young whilst European wasps scavenge sugar and protein from various sources. Bees can be seen swarming in the warmer months when most stings occur. A bee contains a single sting where the European wasp is responsible for multiple stings. Allergies to bee and wasp stings are very common and can sometimes be fatal.

Bee Control Methods

Direct injection of the nest with insecticidal dusts is the most effective method of control however this relies on locating nests and hives. Treating foraging individuals with these dusts is ineffective to nest eradication. Various studies are being carried out on baits to control European wasp nests. These baits rely on an active ingredient impregnated into a food source for the workers to transport throughout the nest to ultimately eliminate it.

Prevention of bee stings

Do not provoke bees and wasps or their nests.
Do not walk on lawn or grassed areas with bare feet.
Seal all food sources.
Take care when drinking out of cans or bottles.
Remove left over pet food from around house.
Remove unnecessary water sources.
